Passive house is the term given to homes which are designed & built to high levels of thermal & energy efficiency. At Staylor Timberframe we are able to work with our customers to provide a proposal for their projects to achieve these levels, by utilising our years of experience in the field of energy efficient homes, along with our in house design service to create a home to achieve passive house performance levels.

For a house to be classed as Passive House it needs to achieve the following levels of performance:-

• Primary Energy Demand - <120kwh/m2/yr
• Primary Heating Demand - <15kwh/m2/yr
• Primary Cooling Demand - <15kwh/m2/yr
• Specific Cooling Load - <10W/m2
• Air tightness - .6 air changes/hr @ n50

To achieve these levels will take a combination of increased thermal insulation, in both the structure & glazing elements, air tight construction in conjunction with a MVHR system for ventilation. These steps, alongside passive solar design being taken into consideration at the design stage, will result in a building with not only increased levels of comfort but also reduce running costs over the life of the building whilst also helping in the fight against climate change.
